DIY Pedialyte

Why pay 5.99 when you can make as much as you need for 5 cents?

I've been laid up in bed (almost like this lady) for the past two days with a stomach bug. It sucks. I need relief, and I know with all my recent trips to the boys room, I'm in danger of dehydration. My loving wife, seeing me in discomfort, went out and bought me some Gatorade.(but with all the salt and artificial coloring, no thanks)

I decided to buy some healthier Pedialyte...

Wait a second, that tiny liter bottle costs $6! I knew there had to be a better way.

Using Google, I found rehydrate.org and the recipe that is the basis for ALL drinks like Pedialyte.

    Here's their simple solution:

The "Simple Solution" -  Home made Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) Recipe

Mix an oral rehydration solution using the following recipe.

Ingredients:

  • Half (1/2) level teaspoon of salt.
  • 6 level teaspoons of sugar.
  • One Litre of clean drinking or boiled water and then cooled or 5 cupfuls (each cup about 200 ml).

Preparation Method:

  • Stir the mixture until the salt and sugar dissolve.

Easy, right? They have these ingredients at McDonald's, meaning you can make it anywhere. It doesn't taste great but try adding fresh orange juice or half of a mashed banana to taste.

I made mine with brown sugar and it was better.

Hope this recipe saves you some money and helps us all get through this cold and flu season in better health and with a little more dough in our wallet.
